Blacksmith shops on family farms were available to any of the workers who might be able to repair, maintain, or create a metal tool, machine, or fixture for use around the farm. Some common projects in a shop such as this might have included sharpening plows, making horseshoes, or creating hardware.

The dimness of the shop helps the smith see the color changes in the metal they are working with. “Forging heat” has a specific yellow-orange glow; when it fades to red, it is time to reheat the metal in the fire.

While the shop is a good place for tinkering and innovating, a skilled blacksmith is an artist.
