2016 Multicultural Wellness Walks

Sunol Regional Wilderness, Sunol, October 22, 2016

Members of the local community gathered to enjoy the fall foliage colors throughout the 6,800 acre Sunol Wilderness. Naturalists led visitors on a walk to Little Yosemite. They learned about the boulders of greenstone, weathered serpentine, the huge oak trees, maple and sycamore. There were sightings of red-tailed hawks, golden eagles and acorn woodpeckers. An academic research team from SFSU conducted a stress health study with the participants.

Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area, Pleasanton, October 8, 2016

Attendees from the Korean Schools Association of Northern California (KSANC) hosted the Annual Drawing and Writing contest at Shadow Cliffs Park. EBRPD worked with this local organization to encourage youth and families in the community to spend more time outdoors.

Tilden Nature Area, Berkeley, September 10, 2016

People gathered for an exciting walk in this beautiful 740-acre preserve.  Participants explored the Environmental Education Center, interacted with the farm animals, learnt about Jewel lake and its natural resources.

Quarry Lakes Regional Recreational Area, Fremont, August 6, 2016

Participants learnt about the history of the quarry and the diverse native plants. There was a wide variety of birds to observe and fun family activities.

Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, Antioch, May 14, 2016

Participants in the Wellness Walk explored the Black Diamond Mines in Antioch. They learned about the history of the mines the tunnel maze underground at the Visitor Center. The Zumba instructor led a fun, interactive exercise routine that had the group moving and learning new dance moves. Participants then played the “lifeboat game” where they had to work together to meet the challenge of creating the smallest “lifeboat”. After the many engaging activities, walk participants replenished with a healthy lunch of tamales and sushi rolls.

At the visitor center participants interacted with the new digital technology and displays, and learned about the myriad wildlife, wetland and the park's history. The walk, by the shoreline, included Zumba movements and concluded with a healthy lunch.
