Area Closure Notice - Remedial Action at Leona Canyon - Updated on 5/14/2022

  • Trails at Leona Canyon will be closed on Monday, May 16 to Wednesday, May 18 for ongoing clean up associated with the remedial action work.
  • Scheduled to begin May 2, 2022. The Leona Heights Rifle Range within Leona Canyon is under a surveying and clean-up action plan that will be performed by the U.S. Army National Guard and Army Corps of Engineers. The site was once used as a military rifle range prior to acquisition by the Park District. The Rifle Range is located along Keller Avenue and Campus Drive in the Sequoyah Heights neighborhood. Map | Fact Sheet

A pristine wooded canyon is protected in this 290-acre parkland near Merritt College in Oakland. Restoration is in progress along Rifle Range Creek along Leona Trail to reduce erosion and protect the riparian ecosystem. Dogs and humans are not allowed in the creek. Please keep dogs on a leash if they will not stay out of the stream.
