Situated in Tilden Regional Park's beautiful Wildcat Canyon in the heart of the north Berkeley Hills, the Regional Park Botanic Garden is devoted to the collection, growth, display, and preservation of the native plants of California. Nearby in the park, the East Bay Chapter of the California Native Plant Society runs the Native Here Nursery, dedicating to growing plants local to Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The first weekend in October, both sites will hold California native plant sales – just in time for fall garden planting!
“Fall is the best time for establishing California native plants, especially those that are drought tolerant,” said Regional Parks Botanic Garden Manager Bart O’Brien. “The weather is cooler and the rainy season is right around the corner. Plants planted in fall have months of relatively cool moist conditions to get their roots established before the long hot summer months. As a result of fall planting, these plants will need less - but still some! - water during the subsequent summer months to get them fully established in your garden.”
At the Botanic Garden, expect to find some 6,000 native plants from all over California for sale! Special treats include: an array of unusual manzanitas (Arctostaphylos spp.) and California wild lilacs (Ceanothus spp.), our new groundcover selection of mountain strawberry (selected for its beautiful blue-green foliage, not fruits): Fragaria virginiana ‘Diamond Mountain’.
Meanwhile at the Native Here Nursery, a mind-boggling 20,000 plants are available – all from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties specifically. There is something for every garden, and a wealth of hardy and clay-tolerant plants on offer. In addition to its special staples of wild ginger, Douglas iris and huckleberry, the nursery will have local manzanitas, packets of bulbs and an assortment of ferns. Sunday will be Family Day and feature local plant-themed art vendors, activities for children, live music, and a general good feeling to enjoy the special world of Native Here.
So, how does your garden grow? With California native plants, of course. Sales benefit the Botanic Garden and the non-profit Native Here Nursery, respectively.
