Anglers' Edge Online

Vol.984 | May 9, 2013
To prevent the destructive Quagga and Zebra mussels from potentially shutting down the water delivery system, EBRPD is asking all boaters to prevent the spread of mussels into East Bay reservoirs and lakes.
If you are launching your own boat at Lake Chabot, Del Valle, Quarry Lakes or Contra Loma, be prepared for a mandatory boat inspection. Boats will not be banded at Shadow Cliffs.
An Annual Invasive Inspection Permit is now available for $40.
Wet boats, motors or gear will be denied launching.Read more...

Fish Thrive in Christmas Tree Reefs
Our underwater camera caught some Gamefish Swimming around a submerged Christmas tree reef created by our fisheries management staff and volunteers.
General Activity
DEL VALLE (LIVERMORE)
The water temperature is up to 65 degrees. The water clarity is improving to 10-15 feet. The bass are on fire just coming off the spawn and hitting Rat-L-Traps Jigs, Robo worms, Sinkos and crank baits. The smallmouth bass are just coming off the spawn as well and hitting crank baits and spoons. Stripers are hitting anchovies, chicken livers and Rapalas. Catfish are starting to come out of their winter slow period, hitting Peruvian anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and chicken livers, and the hot bait lately has been nightcrawlers! Crappie have been found on the tulles of the banks, hitting little grubs and shiny lures. Two catfish have been pulled out of the lake weighing in at 18 lbs. and 14 lbs. The shad are also spawning in the lake; large bait balls have been spotted in many areas along the shoreline. Quite the show to watch and quite the feast for the bass congregated below them, so using shad-like lures for the bass.

The water clarity is about 15 feet but the bite has still been off-and-on with trout. When it is on, trout have been caught from the shore and by trollers. When you bring in a fish of 5 lbs. or more, we will take your picture and give you a "Lake Chabot Whopper Club" button. If you catch a whopper over 8 lbs. (trout), 10 lbs. (catfish) or 5 lbs. (bass), you will also receive a Lake Chabot Whopper mug. For beginning anglers, if you have any questions on what to use or where to go, please come down to the Marina and one of our friendly staff members will be more than happy to help you get set up on your fishing adventure. Be wary of the wind in the afternoons if you plan on taking out an electric, row or kayak!
Beginning in April, we are on our summer hours and are open later. We'll be closing at 6 p.m., and boat rentals will stop at 5 p.m.
We've revamped our food menu at the Lake Chabot Marina Cafe! We’ve got all new food for breakfast, lunch, and even for kids! Come check it out. With summertime right around the corner, we are beginning to hire here at the lake! If you know anyone or you think that you would make a good fit to the Lake Chabot Fishing Outfitters team either as a dock worker or a cafe employee, come to the marina and pick up an application, or visit this link to print out an application.
TROUT
Trout fishing is a bit slow right now but hopefully it will pick back up shortly. Water clarity is beginning to improve as long as the weather stays sunny. For now, make sure to use bait that is bright to lure the fish in, and if you're going to be trolling, the best lures to use are Firetiger Rapalas, Kastmasters and Mirashads. When they do start to pick up, chartreuse and rainbow Power Bait will be the best baits to catch trout! When trolling, make sure to let out about 100 feet of line and let the motor do all the work but also be wary of other anglers on the shoreline so your lines don't get tangled!
BASS
Bass fishing has been slowing down as we enter into trout season. If you are fishing for bass, they are hitting mostly in the early mornings and evenings on plastics, jigs and hula grubs. A good spot to fish for bass would be near the island, or the tules by Raccoon Point. Most of the anglers are throwing Senkos, drop shots and Brush hogs to get the fish to come out from their deep, off-shoreline structure. Livewells can be provided upon request, thanks to Walton's Pond. Please practice catch-and-release for bass, as they are not stocked in the lake and their population depends on you!
Last week, we had a 9.86-lb. bass caught over on the first dock by Ken Manstrom using only nightcrawlers!
CATFISH
Catfishing is slow at this time due to the water temperature. Look for better catfishing conditions when the water warms up. Typically around this time, catfish are going to be located near Raccoon Point, but they have also been around the Half Moon Bay area, behind the island, and at Coot's Landing. Anglers are using mackerel, anchovies and chicken liver for bait, as well as nightcrawlers.
