The Peyton Slough Wetlands Advisory Committee and Mt. View Sanitary District will be holding a public open house event on Saturday, May 17, at the Mt. View Sanitary facility in Martinez. The event celebrates American Wetlands Month, the enhancement projects in McNabney Marsh, the opening of a new bird observation platform and interpretive panels, the memorial plaque in honor of Dr. Teng-Chung Wu (widely regarded as the "Grandfather of Pollution Prevention" in the Golden State), and Mt. View Sanitary District's 85th anniversary.
The Wetlands Committee originated after the disastrous 480,000 gallon Shell Refinery oil spill in 1988 which contaminated what is now Waterbird Preserve and miles of adjacent bay shoreline. The Peyton Slough comprises the entire wetland area between Waterbird and the Carquinez Strait. Committee members include the Department of Fish and Game, Mt. View Sanitary District, Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District, East Bay Regional Park District, Mt. Diablo Audobon Society, Caltrans, Rhodia Inc., the San Francisco Water Board, the Watershed Nursery, and others.
Enjoy a fun-filled day with activities such as marsh discovery walks, live animal presentations, pond turtle rafts, kids' and family activities, exhibitions, free BBQ, guest speakers, plant tours, and more! Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2008.
Mr. Ted Radke, Ward 7 Board Member, Vice-President of the Board, East Bay Regional Park District, will be a guest speaker for the event.
