On Monday, January 21, 2008, Rev. Doug Siden was honored at the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration held in the ILWU Hall with the awarding of the Betita Coty Award. The honor is given annually to an individual for their community leadership reflecting the principles of Dr. King's life.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Rally Committee gives the award in memory of the late Rev. Betita Coty of the Shiloh Christian Fellowship.
Rev. Siden represents Oakland and adjacent communities on the board of directors of the East Bay Regional Park District. Additionally, he is chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center established by Congresswoman Barbara Lee to teach youth in Dr. King's non-violence leadership. He is the former director of youth and camps for the American Baptist Churches of the West.
