The East Bay Regional Park District congratulates native plant enthusiast and active volunteer Charlice Danielsen for being awarded a prestigious Jefferson Award administered by the American Institute for Public Service. Danielsen is the president of the East Bay Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and founder and manager of the Native Here Nursery located in Tilden Regional Park. The Jefferson Award is awarded to Bay Area residents who make a difference in their community. Danielsen was honored for her 30-year history of preserving and protecting California's native plants and flowers. "Charli Danielsen has been a leader and pioneer in statewide efforts to protect the native flora of California, which is fast disappearing. In recent years her Native Here project has filled a critical need by providing local native plants for local residents, a need not adequately addressed by any other source. Her dedication has inspired many—including me—to shoulder the wheel and, beginning locally, to do the best we can to save our state's threatened resources," says Stephen W. Edwards, Ph. D., director, Regional Parks Botanic Garden. The East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors will honor Charlice at a future board meeting.
Each week, The Chronicle features a Bay Area resident who has won a Jefferson Award. The awards are administered by the American Institute for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service. Bay Area residents profiled in The Chronicle are also featured on CBS 5-TV and KCBS-AM, which are Jefferson Award media partners, along with The Chronicle.
