The East Bay Regional Park District will begin renovations on the pump systems at Don Castro and Cull Canyon Regional Recreation Areas. Both facilities were built in the 1960s and have been popular swimming destinations for several decades. They are especially popular with families, and offer a sandy swim area, including a roped-off shallow portion for small children, chlorinated water, and lifeguard service throughout the summer.
The Park District Operation staff has been planning on renovating the aging pump systems for many years and now has the resources to do so. The Park District will stagger the work so that at least one of the swim lagoons will be open during the summer. Cull Canyon (18627 Cull Canyon Road in Castro Valley) is currently closed and will reopen on July 4. Don Castro (22400 Woodroe Avenue in Hayward) is currently open on the weekends and will open weekly after Memorial Day weekend. It will remain open up through and including July 4 and then will close for the rest of the swim season. Both facilities will be open on July 4.
Swim hours at both facilities will continue to be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily when open. Back to top
