The East Bay Regional Park District dedicated a new barrier-free fishing pier at Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area Thursday, October 5, at an 11 a.m.-1 p.m. ceremony. The recently constructed pier is one of the Park District's proudest accomplishments this year.
The new pier is located on Horseshoe Lake, the largest of the recreation area's three lakes and a popular fishing spot for local residents. The pier is uniquely designed to float on the lake's fluctuating water while remaining compliant under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
"The new pier is a wonderful addition to the park," states Carol Severin, President of the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors. "The water level in the lake is at its lowest right now. In the spring, the pier could be 20 to 30 feet higher and still remain stable and accessible for park visitors to fish, relax over the water, or just enjoy the views."
The pier's unique zigzag design and length are just two of the features that enable the pier to gently rise and fall with the water. Alameda County Water District manages the water in the park's three lakes; the lake water comes from Alameda Creek. About 35 percent of the potable water used by the residents of Fremont, Newark, and Union City is stored in Quarry Lakes.
Speakers at the event included Carol Severin, and Judy Huang, President of the Board of Directors of the Alameda County Water District.
Construction of the fishing pier, along with improvements to the parking lot and access paths, was a cooperative project between the Park District and the Alameda County Water District. The cost of the fishing pier was $1.2 million, with funding from the Park District's 1988 voter-approved bond act, Measure AA, and Prop. 40, the State Bond at passed by voters in 2002, along with a grant from Wildlife Conservation Board.
The dedication coincided with the District's Special Kids Fishing Derby. The Park District sponsors fishing derbies four times each year at various Regional Parks lakes for elementary students in local special education and special needs classes.
Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area is a partnership between Alameda County Water District, the City of Fremont, and East Bay Regional Park District. The park officially opened in 2001. It is located at 2250 Isherwood Way in Fremont.
