About The Park
Rising steeply to the east behind the city of Fremont, Mission and Monument peaks form a dramatic backdrop to the South Bay.
Mission Peak has been described as one of the Bay Area's most underrated summits. The determined hiker who reaches its top will be rewarded with views of Mount Hamilton to the south, the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, Mt. Tamalpais to the north, and Mt. Diablo and the Sierra Nevada to the northeast.

Hawks and vultures share the summit airspace with sailplanes riding the thermals, and a down-to-earth herd of feral goats roams the cliffs.
About five hours are required to reach the summit and return. Mission Peak's 2,999 acres are accessible from a staging area at the east end of Stanford Avenue in Fremont (steep climb to the summit), or from parking lots at Ohlone College (more gradual ascent). There is no access from Mill Creek Road.
The Stanford Avenue staging area is also the western access to the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, a 29-mile hiking and riding trail through some of Southern Alameda County's most beautiful wilderness.
A regional trail also leads from Mission Peak two miles south to Monument Peak, then on into Ed Levin County Park in Santa Clara County. Besides linking Santa Clara to Alameda County, the trail is a section of the Ridge Trail being developed to encircle San Francisco Bay.
Park Activities
Hiking, biking, dog walking and horseback riding are popular activities available in the Regional Preserve.
Interpretive Hikes
The interpretive staff at Coyote Hills Regional Park plans organized hikes along the slopes and the peak. For information on these and other naturalist-led activities, call the Coyote Hills Visitor Center at (510) 544-3220.
Backpack Camping
Eagle Spring Backpack Camp offers backpack camping opportunities. Reservation is required. To make a reservation, call 1-888-EBPARKS or 1-888-327-2757, press option 2.
Radio Control (R/C) Flying
Remote-controlled aircrafts can be launched at R/C Hill only. All remote-controlled pilots launching at R/C Hill must be members of South Bay Soaring Society (SBSS) and must have in their possession a current membership card. No motorized or gas-powered aircraft are allowed. No other sites within Mission Peak Regional Preserve are approved for this activity.
Hang Gliding and Paragliding
The Wings of Rogallo has a launch site within Mission Peak Regional Preserve to conduct hang gliding and paragliding activities.

To Reach The Park
From I-680 in Fremont, exit at Mission Boulevard and go north. After about 1/2 mile, turn right (east) on Stanford Avenue and follow it to the staging area.

Park Update
- Trail Update
- Be mindful of changing weather conditions and be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and precipitation. Mud is a concern when using the trails after any rain event. The mud on the trails will build up on shoes and boots making hiking more difficult. Good wet weather alternatives include the Hidden Valley Trail and portions of the Peak Trail, which have graveled surfaces. On colder days snow is a possibility in the higher elevations so be prepared. For any trail related issues or reports please call the Park Office at (925) 862-2218.
- Grazing Update
- You may encounter cows and calves year round in the park, although calves are generally removed by mid-spring. Be mindful of cattle and exercise caution when near them. There are signs on all entrances to grazed areas of the park with information on how to act around cattle and report incidents or problems. For information on the Park District’s grazing program click on the Stewardship/Resources link on the left side of this page.
