Dedication of Pleasanton's Segment of Iron Horse Trail
Collaborative Effort Culminates in Celebration on Monday, March 31, 2008
Pleasanton, CA----The official dedication for the newest leg of the 33-mile Iron Horse Trail is scheduled on Monday, March 31, 2008 in Pleasanton. The one-mile segment of the trail runs from Santa Rita Road, across Mohr Avenue, to Busch Road in two segments. The trail features a 10-foot wide paved path with a 2-foot wide decomposed granite lane, offering versatility for walkers, runners, skaters and cyclists alike. Other amenities include benches, distance markers, a water fountain, various landscaped sections, and a traffic crossing device at Mohr Avenue.
The $1.6 million project was a cooperative effort between the City of Pleasanton, Ponderosa Homes, East Bay Regional Park District and the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority (ACTIA). ACTIA contributed $450,000 in funding for the Santa Rita Road to Mohr Avenue segment of the trail through a grant that was administered through the East Bay Regional Park District. Construction of this segment of the trail was handled by McGuire and Hester, under the management of the City of Pleasanton.
Ponderosa Homes donated the design services for the project, and both funded and constructed the Mohr Avenue to Busch Road Segment of the trail. Both segments of the trail will be maintained by the City of Pleasanton and patrolled by East Bay Regional Park District police officers.
The Iron Horse Trail follows the Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way established in 1891 and abandoned in 1977. The trail connects residential and commercial areas, business parks, schools, public transportation, open space and parks, regional trails and community facilities. The trail stretches from Suisun Bay in Contra Costa County to Livermore, connecting two counties and 12 cities.
