May 6-June 27: Artist Exhibition: Jacqueline Krayna, Tilden Nature Area, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Bay Area artist Jacqueline Krayna will display her photographs of the unique and expressive animals of Tilden's Little Farm. May 10: Backyard Bird and Butterfly Festival, Coyote Hills Regional Park, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Join us for the 9th annual Butterfly Festival. Dedicated to increasing the numbers and species of butterflies in Bay Area landscapes, the festival offers a day of adventure and learning that allows you to get close to nature's 'flying jewels.' Learn how to bring your backyard to life by creating wildlife friendly habitat! Enjoy garden tours, family hands-on activities, educational speakers, slide presentations and music. May 17: Celebrate American Wetlands Month, Waterbird Regional Preserve, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Enjoy a fun-filled day with activities such as marsh discovery walks, live animal presentations, pond turtle rafts, kids' and family activities, exhibitions, free BBQ, guest speakers, plant tours, and more! For more information about this event, click here.

May 17: Fresh Tracks: Leisurely Hike to Little Yosemite, Sunol Regional Wilderness, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

May 17 & 18: Musical Machines at the Patterson House, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

May 17 & 18: Bay Area Storytelling Festival, Kennedy Grove Regional Recreation Area, 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Four nationally-known tellers will delight you with folktales, movement, music and more. Carol Birch tells timeless traditional tales with intelligence and sly humor. Drawing from his African-American roots, Baba Jamal Koram tells stories with compelling authority. The music of the conch shell and the mbira moves through the performances of Bahamian-born Derek Burrows. Olga Loya of California honors her Hispanic heritage through lively, poetic performances. May 18: Fire Truck Day!, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Grab your boots and fire hat and come on down for a fun filled day with America's finest firefighters! Climb aboard a variety of new and antique fire engines. Get wet during the 'Battle of the Fire Trucks'. Groove to live music by the Bungee Jumpin' Cows, and shake hands with Smokey the Bear! Crafts, games, and lots of squirting water will make this a wet and wild day for the whole family! Special Even Fees: $5.00/adults, $4.00/seniors (62+), $4.00/children (4-17yrs). May 24-26: The 24th Annual Rattlesnake Rendezvous, Sunol Regional Wilderness, 9 a.m., May 24 - 2 p.m., May 26

Travel far back in time and join our intrepid band of primitives for a weekend of Stone Age living skills. Aside from modern sleeping gear and clothing, we will experience as closely as possible the rigors and satisfactions of living in the old ways. Experience fire starting, flint knapping, cordage, cooking over an open fire (no metal pots, pans or grills allowed), music, tracking, bead making, storytelling and music around the campfire and so much more! May 26: Memorial Day on the Farm, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

On this historic holiday we invite you to the farm for the day. Bring a picnic and lollygag on the lawn, while your children roll up their sleeves, help with the morning chores (11am - noon). Taste some farm baked cookies from our outdoor country kitchen (11am -1pm). Try your skills at some old time games (noon-1pm). Take a stroll with an interpreter and learn what life was like long ago (2-3pm). At 3pm we will participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. Disabled accessible. May 26: Memorial Day at the Mines, Ardenwood Historic Farm, Tour Hours: noon - 1 p.m; 1 p.m. - 2 p.m; 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.; 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Tours through the Hazel-Atlas Silica-Sand Mine will be offered on a first-come/first-served basis. Purchase tickets at the temporary visitor center located at the park headquarters. May 26: Family Fun Memorial Day, Crab Cove Visitor Center, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Drop in for all-day family nature activities on Memorial Day: bay life 'touch-tank,' nature crafts, snake meet and greet, nature videos, and more. 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Low Tide Mudflat - Rocky Shore Exploration. 1:30 - 2 p.m.: Worm Composting Demonstration. 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.: 'Catch of the Day' program. May 31: See Jane Run Women's ½ Marathon/5K/1 mile Kids' run, Crown Memorial State Beach, 8 a.m.

Runners and walkers are welcome! Women only. Take in the scenic beauty of Alameda’s Bay Trail and breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. End the race at Crown Memorial Park, with a women focused race expo and 1 mile kids' run. Pre-registration is required. Register online at See Jane Run website. April 5-6: Hazel-Atlas Mine Re-Open Celebration, Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, Noon - 4 p.m.

Join the open house celebration of the greatly expanded Hazel-Atlas silica sand mine tour at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch on April 5th and 6th. Take a quick peek or a leisurely stroll through 810 feet of this 1930s era mine. It's our opening weekend of mine operation for the year, so come enjoy some magnificent history and spectacular underground features. Staff and volunteers will be stationed throughout the mine to point out features and answer questions. Reservations are not required for this special event. April 19: California Native Plant Sale, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Annual sale of California native plants, including shrubs, trees, perennials, and many plants not available in a nursery. Horticultural advice gladly given! Explore the Garden and buy plants to take home (bring boxes). Rain or shine. Click here to learn more.

April 19: Tartan Day Scottish Fair, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Celebrate Tartan Day and join in the pageantry as Scottish folk from all over the area gather their clans and celebrate their heritage. Enjoy bagpipe bands, highland dancing, traditional Scottish food, and historic re-enactments. There will also be Clan Society exhibits and a special Children's Glenn where they can partake in Highland games, a traditional haggis toss, arts & crafts, storytelling and perhaps find fairies. Special musical performances by Peter Daldry, Culann's Hounds and the Fremont Police Department Pipe Band.

Presented by the East Bay Scottish Association and East Bay Regional Park District Interpretive Staff. Special Event Fee: $10 adults/ $6 seniors/ $5 children (4-17). Free parking. Wheelchair accessible. Event ends 4:30 p.m.; no admissions after 4 p.m.

April 19: Earth Day, Washington Park, Alameda, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Celebrate Earth Day: join Alameda's family-fun festival and pledge to help the health of Planet Earth! Music, exhibitors, games, and crafts guarantee an action-packed visit from 2-3 p.m., come to the Crab Cove Visitor Center for the presentation, "Making Every Day Earth Day: Living Well with the Earth in Mind." April 19: Earth Day Trail Maintenance, Contra Loma Regional Park, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Join EBRPD's Ivan Dickson and Wildlife Partners volunteers on a trail maintenance and wildlife habitat improvement project at Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch for California Trail Days/Earth Day. Tools, instruction, and lunch provided. Volunteers should bring hats, gloves, snacks, water, and wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Volunteers. No dogs, please. March 23: Holiday Games, Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Celebrate Easter at Middle Harbor Shoreline with fun family games for your little ones, including a historic egg roll at 1 p.m., a potato spoon race at 1:30 p.m., and a sack race at 2 p.m. Please organize your own egg hunt.

March 23: Egg Decorating, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Many cultures decorate eggs. Join us to experiment with some farm-made dyes and various techniques. We'll bring the boiled eggs and colors, you'll bring your imagination.

March 23: Search for the Golden Egg, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 1:30 - 2 p.m.

It's somewhere on the farm! Listen for clues when you hear the bell clanging in the Farmyard. Whoever finds it, gets to keep it, and receives good luck all spring!

March 23: Easter Egg Roll, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 2:30-3 p.m.

A quirky 128-year-old White House tradition comes to the farm. We have our own fabulous green lawn and big white house. Bring a picnic and enjoy holiday fun!

December 1 & 2: An Ardenwood Christmas, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Celebrate the holiday season in Victorian style! Visit the beautifully decorated Patterson House, sing Christmas carols, search for the Yule log, and meet Father Christmas. Get into the holiday spirit as you listen to live holiday musical performances, make some holiday crafts and enjoy historic cooking demonstrations. Help us decorate for a Christmas Ball and even learn a dance step or two.

The work of painter Adam Wolpert (adamwolpert.com) reflects a lifelong engagement with nature. This exhibit will highlight his exquisite plein-air landscape paintings, featuring prints of Bodega Bay and scenes from the gardens and forests of the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) in Sonoma County. He has painted for over a decade at OAEC responding to the spirit of the land, its seasons and moods. His Bodega Bay series celebrates the dynamic mingling of land, sea and water. Closed on Mondays. November 2: "After the Storm" Book Signing, Oakland Museum of California, 5-7 p.m.

A rare collection of some of the most beautiful and captivating images of parklands in the East Bay Regional Park District, photographed by the acclaimed late photographer Bob Walker, is now available in a book to be released in November.
A book signing with author/editor Chris Beaver will take place at the Oakland Museum of California's lower lobby on Friday, November 2, from 5-7 p.m. For more information, visit: www.ebparks.org/bobwalkerbook.

November 11: Walnut Harvesting, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 1-2:30 p.m.

Millions of squirrels know harvesting walnuts is lots of fun! We'll gather them then hull and wash them with our antique machinery. You may also select some to take home. This is a drop in program; no registration is required. For information, call (510) 796-0199.

November 11: Basketry Materials Gathering, Coyote Hills Regional Park, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

You'll have an opportunity to learn how California Indians managed the natural landscape with burning, digging, and pruning techniques. You'll also help us gather sedge for use in next year's basketry programs for school groups and the general public. Reg. Required: 1-888-EBPARKS (1-888-327-2757).

November 25: Wreath Making Workshop, Ardenwood Historic Farm, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Create a festive wreath crafted from aromatic evergreens. Learn the significance of holly and ivy as well as the natural history of useful native plants. AAAARGH and avast there ye scurvy scum of all ages and genders! Peter Pan and his Lost Boys are in dire need of a new crew to enlist at Skull Island for an unforgettable Halloween adventure. Swabbies should be willing to deal with Cap'n Hooks' lost treasure, scaley reptiles, and the perils of a Halloween at sea and on land as they investigate the hallowed traditions of this ancient holiday. The faithful BaNana will lead the way to Neverland. Guided hikes begin every fifteen minutes starting at 5:15 p.m., last approximately 1 and 3/4 hours. and become more dark and spooky as the night progresses (nothing gory or disgusting). Earlier start times are best for younger children. Pre-registration limited to families and individuals only–no large organized groups! Children must be accompanied by an adult.
