East Bay Regional Parks District: Embrace Life!

The East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department uses a variety of methods to reduce the volume and continuity of hazardous wildland fuels, along fuel breaks in the East Bay Hills, and elsewhere within District parks.,  In conjunction with Stewardship resource specialists and Park Operations personnel, we thin and prune trees and shrubs, cut dried grass in heavily used areas and control invasive weeds. This work is accomplished by our own fire engine crews, tree and brush removal contractors, neighborhood conservation groups, goat grazing, prescribed fire, youth hand crews and CAL FIRE inmate labor.

Prescribed fires (also called controlled fires) are fires intentionally ignited by specifically trained fire professionals to accomplish management objectives in specific areas under defined conditions identified in an approved prescribed fire plan. Unlike wildfires, prescribed fires are conducted only when conditions are acceptable.

Strategically placed prescribed fires can reduce the threat of uncontrollable wildfires and increase firefighter safety.  Prescribed fires also: 1) reduce hazardous fuels; 2) improve wildlife habitat; 3) manage competing vegetation; 4) improve access; 5) dispose of fuel treatment debris; 6) prepare sites for seedling or planting; 7) control insects and disease; 8) improve forage for grazing; 9) improves recreation and aesthetic values; 10) perpetuate fire-dependent species.

2011 Fuels Management Projects

East Bay Regional Park District Fire is currently conducting numerous fire management projects throughout the District to reduce the potential for severe of wildland fires and to enhance habitat for native plant and animal species. Fuel breaks are continually being maintained by fire crews, contract crews, and livestock grazing to prevent resprouting of eucalyptus and other non-native flammable vegetation. This work is funded through a variety of methods, including Measure CC, general funds, and, whenever possible, grants from several federal sources.

Anthony Chabot Campground Wildland Fuels Management Project

The project is located in East Bay Regional Park District‘s Anthony Chabot Family Campground, located east of Oakland and north of Castro Valley in Anthony Chabot Regional Park. The District is seeking experienced, reputable, and qualified contractors to reduce vegetation fuel volumes on 140 acres in the area around the campground to reduce the intensity of wildland fires and to enhance the existing fuel break, access, and evacuation routes.
